I'm reading about Aristotle's God the other day, and it stops me cold.
Not because it's God—it's worse. It's the idea that something fundamental drives all of nature forward, and we don't actually have a name for it. We've been calling it purpose, or will, or intelligence. And then Challenger points out we just renamed it "energy" and moved on, didn't we?
In a piece from Literary Hub, Melanie Challenger—who writes on philosophy and animal life—digs into what she calls "agent detection." That's the neuroscience term for how your brain spots something alive and separate from a boulder rolling downhill. Researchers have found specific regions of the brain, including the ventral temporal cortex, activate when animals establish the source of an action. But here's where it gets interesting. Not every action matters to the animals noticing. A wind in a tunnel doesn't grab attention. A shadow moving with apparent intention does.
The question isn't really neurological, though. It's moral.
When we ask what agency is, we're not writing a definition. We're deciding who gets a say in the world. We're negotiating power. Challenger's new book argues that all living beings possess agency and can shape their surroundings with the goal of staying alive. Not as machines. Not as mystical essences. As purposeful bodies—a frog deciding to leap, a plant orienting toward light, a slime mould solving a maze without a brain to solve it. These aren't metaphors. They're observations.
What gets me is the denial underneath our institutions. We talk about "denying agency" like it's an intellectual mistake—a classification error. The greatest hurdle we face is our denial of the agency and meaningfulness of the lives of other creatures, and that denial is doing real work. It justifies the draining, the culling, the treatment of other animals as resources to spend rather than beings with their own goals.
The irony is we built whole philosophies on the question. Aristotle couldn't decide if motion needed an "Unmoved Mover"—some external cause pushing everything. We still can't. But a frog knows something we're still learning. It wants to stay alive. Where does that wanting come from? From being alive. It's circular. It's not elegant. But it's correct.
